Our Projects: Laos
ORPHANAGE TO INDEPENDENCE
Luang Prabang Orphanage
Luang Prabang, Laos
Due to the support of the GO Community last year, we were able to assist 32 children during the transition from life at the Luang Prabang Orphanage to either continue their studies at the university or find employment. If the children did not receive this assistance, they would have been forced to return to their villages where they would have had limited prospects for employment and no medical or nutritional support. Because of the success of the first collaboration, GO would like to continue to support the transition program at the Luang Prabang Orphanage. This year, 43 children will be leaving the orphanage and need support as they struggle to become self-sufficient and active members of their community.
The goals of this program are to:
1. Provide food, shelter, and support to 43 orphans
2. Assist children to either continue their academic studies or find employment

FEATURED BIOS

My name is
Toum Ma. I am 18 and I lived at the orphanage school for 12 years. I finished this year. I am originally from Numbuk district which is 3 hours from Luang Prabang. I have many friends at the orphanage and it is a happy place. I hope I can study next year at university or find the work in the restaurant or guest house. I like my village but there is not a lot of opportunities for the work and the jobs do not pay well. I will be very happy if I can stay in Luang Prabang to work.

I am
Desamore. I am 17 years old. My home is near Luang Prabang and I have been at the orphanage for 6 years. I don't have a mother or father. I sometimes visit my village to see my relatives but there is not much food there so I like to stay at the orphanage instead. I will finish the school next year and want to work in Luang Prabang. I would like to study English so I can work in a hotel or guesthouse.
WHY LAOS
Laos is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. Due to the high levels of poverty and limited access to health care, life expectancy is low and children face a considerable risk of losing one or both of their parents at a young age. UNICEF estimates that there are over 85,000 orphans under 15 years old in Laos. In addition, high levels of infant mortality, significant rates of malnutrition, limited access to health care and low educational attainment are among a range of serious issues facing many Lao children. Until the health care system improves, providing care for orphans will continue to be a significant social welfare issues in Laos.
