Rwanda Growth Initiative (RGI)
Gisenyi, Rwanda
GO Campaign partner Rwanda Growth Initiative (RGI) is transforming a vocational training school that will educate and equip 100 marginalized youth with employable skills such customer service, secretarial skills, computer technology, electrician skills, welding and the English language. The school, Centre de Formation des Jeunes Aux Metiérs (CFJM), is located in Gisenyi, a beautiful lakeside town that will soon be bustling with hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and job opportunities for the skilled.
The school is in dire need of renovations and supplies so it can adequately prepare its students to secure stable jobs, enabling them to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. The first phase of restoring CFJM is to re-roof the buildings, restore classrooms and purchase materials including computers and related hardware and software. On the horizon for the next phase is the development and implementation of a robust educational program. Stay tuned to see your donations at work and the next phases ahead!

Evariste Tuyisenge - Headmaster at CFJM
Born in the DR Congo as a Rwandan refugee, Evariste returned to Rwanda with his parents in 1995. Shortly after their return, both parents died, leaving Evariste to care for his three younger brothers. Even at a young age, Evariste understood the value of his own education and struggled to stay in school while providing a home and food for his siblings.
In 2003 Evariste enrolled at the Universite Libre de Kigali and studied Rural Development with a focus on economics and management. Upon graduation and having proven his leadership skills, Evariste was asked to be headmaster at CFJM. Evariste has managed to maintain a curriculum despite limited funding and a lack of government support. Today, Evariste needs the resources to keep the school's doors open so that students like him, who are responsible for their families, have the opportunity to thrive.
Pierre Musabyimana - Electricity Teacher at CFJM
Pierre can relate to his students' struggles and wants to help them succeed. Pierre's first job was as a teacher and in 1990 he became a police officer. Due to the escalating tensions in the country and the corruption of police forces, Pierre had to abandon his post. Being resourceful, he put his skills to use and worked as an electrician. In 1994, the civil unrest erupted into genocide and like thousands of Rwandans Pierre was forced to leave his home and flee to DR Congo.
The years that followed were tumultuous and devastating for Pierre as he lived the unstable life of a refugee. In 1999 when peace finally returned to Rwanda, Pierre moved to the capital city of Kigali to seek a new life for himself. After some time, the Rwandan Ministry of Education referred him to CFJM where he became the electricity teacher. An upstanding man, he is never caught without a smile on his face. Pierre offers warmth and love to all he meets, especially his students for whom he has an immense amount of enthusiasm and pride.
WHY RWANDA
Rwanda, roughly the size of Maryland, is a country in East Africa with lush rolling hills and thick jungle that is home to rare mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The genocide in 1994 devastated the country and left countless children without parents and the infrastructure in disarray. Rwandans are now unified but the government is still faced with the challenges of coping with the spread of HIV/AIDS, providing affordable universal education and creating job opportunities for a growing population soon to reach 10 million. The economic, social and future progress of Rwanda depends on its ability to educate and train its youth so they can create a strong, vibrant workforce. The GO Community's support of CFJM will help Rwandan youth in Gisenyi take part in rebuilding a stronger, more prosperous community and nation.
