“With the support of Siddhartha School Project, we can bring peace through their education and effort. It is very important to help Ladakhi children make a contribution to our community and the wider world.” – His Holiness the Dalai Lama
GO Campaign Local Hero Khen Rinpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist abbot and founder of Siddhartha School in Ladakh, India. Started in 1995, Siddhartha School gives the children of this remote Himalayan area access to high quality modern education, while also honoring the traditional Buddhist way of life. In 1996, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed Rinpoche to be the head abbot of the newly reestablished Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in southern India, an extremely coveted honor. Rinpoche humbly set aside this appointment so that he could further devote himself to the Siddhartha School. In 2005 the Dalai Lama again asked Rinpoche to accept the abbot position, and this time he could not refuse.
On August 9, 2016 Siddhartha School and the students were honored with a visit from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
After his arrival, HH the Dalai Lama spent some time walking the grounds of the Siddhartha School and expressed deep gratitude for all those who have worked tirelessly for the school and its students, as well as those who have given the school financial support. He observed students engaging in a lively, traditional Buddhist debate taught in Tibetan and Ladakhi monastaries, remarking that the debate tradition was useful for developing the rationality of the mind and critical thinking skills so integral to real scholarship.
In collaboration with our partners at Siddhartha School, GO Campaign has worked to support projects that improve the quality of life of the students. Our Campus Water Project supported the completion of a reservoir and provided piping across the campus, allowing the students and staff to easily obtain access to clean water when they need it. GO Campaign’s most recent grant will be used towards building a new dormitory for the girls. Together, GO Campaign is excited to continue to support the education of youth in Ladakh!
