2011 GO Innovation Award: Invention
Inventor Bernard Kiwia was our 2011 GO Innovation Award (GIA) recipient. As the GIA winner, he organized and held hands-on workshops for local primary school students to share information about how he created various inventions as well as foster students’ creativity and innovation skills. During the workshop, students learned how to construct a few of Bernard’s technologies such as a hand-held maize sheller and a bicycle-powered blender. These experiences increased students’ confidence in their own abilities to develop inventions and inspired them to attempt to solve local problems through their own ingenuity. In addition to the workshops, the grant also allowed Bernard to employ three young engineers to help build a new workshop and continue to produce technologies such as a solar water heater and a drip irrigation system.
