From Boys to Men
In 2016, GO Campaign gave a grant to the CYGN’s Rites of Passage program to empower 120 adolescent males living in South-Central Los Angeles. During the program, boys have access to many wrap-around services such as: Counseling, Homework Assistance, Literacy Support, Life Skills Workshops, Field Trips, and more. The program lasts 9 months and includes weekly sessions where boys develop their knowledge of the various Rites as well as work with social workers at the Avalon Carver Community Center to process any trauma or emotions that arise during the course. With a proven track record of increasing school attendance rates, students’ self-esteem, grade point averages, standardized test scores, graduation rates, and post-secondary education opportunities, this model also has a record of decreasing: behavioral problems, suspensions, truancy, gang involvement, and alcohol/drug abuse. Over the past 3 years, Rites of Passage program has been recognized by the White House as one of America’s most promising programs for youth development and family wellness in at-risk communities. GO is excited to work with CYGN to improve the lives of adolescent boys in Los Angeles.
