Navajo Youth Empowerment
Thanks to the support of the GO community, a youth leadership council was established at a community center. The mission of the Thoreau Community Center focuses on inspiring joy and hope in the youth, especially after a tragic cluster of youth suicides in 2010. Funds helped create a safe space for youth to discuss their struggles as well as their goals in life and in their community. The community began to invest heavily in its youth outreach, and the youth were able to contribute their ideas in improving the community itself through a youth board at the Community Center. As a result of this project and leadership programming, the youth developed a stronger community amongst themselves. They participated in many cultural and social outings together. Overall, the peer support and outreach improved the confidence and health of the participating youth. The Community Center hopes to bring in more youth. Despite these improvements, there are still challenges for youth, but the staff is working hard to strengthen programming in the years to come.
