Women Awareness Centre Nepal (WACN) | Nepal
In 2016, GO Campaign provided educational opportunities for 1,000 children of Nepali brick factory workers through Women’s Awareness Center Nepal (WACN). Grant funds were used to support coaching classes for these children, pay for materials for school and extra-curricular activities, establish a scholarship fund, and support income generating activities. Most of the villagers in the area are forced to work in the harsh conditions of the brick factory due to lack of alternative income generation sources. The financial support received helped them to start their own income generating activities in the village. Most of the beneficiaries started livestock farming in the village and gradually trying to leave brick factory work. From that income, they were able to run their household expenses as well as send their children to school.
Led by Local Hero Prativa Subedi, WACN was created in 1991 to improve the socio-economic status and self-development capacity of the disadvantaged. Specifically, WACN helps to empower women in rural communities through the creation of economic opportunities through cooperatives. The mission of WACN is to help the women become financially independent and self-sustaining. Since joining the cooperatives, members have been able to earn and save money to support their families, allowing them to send their children to school and provide proper nutrition. WACN works with villagers in the Kavrepalanchowk district, Chitwan, Makawanpur and Kathmandu Districts to implement its program, which are tailored to the specific needs of each community.
