Cyber G.IRL
G.IRL | California, USA
In 2024 GO Campaign provided a grant to G.IRL for their Cyber G.IRL program. Cyber G.IRL is an 8-week coding camp designed to spark interest in STEAM careers among young girls. The program directly impacted 17 young women.
Through an engaging, hands-on approach, the program introduces participants to coding, graphic design, and journalism by guiding them in creating a digital magazine. This not only honed their coding skills but also allowed them to explore the creative aspects of graphic design and delve into the world of journalism. The Cyber G.IRL program has been instrumental in inspiring many young girls to consider STEAM fields as a future career path. The program focused on mentorship by BIPOC instructors leading them in their specialty. Showcasing successful professionals who share their backgrounds, the program fosters a sense of possibility and breaks down barriers for these young women.
The impact of the program extended beyond the curriculum. At the culmination of the program, all participants were surprised with brand-new Mac laptops. This gift provided many households with their first-ever computer, eliminating a significant obstacle to continued learning and exploration in these fields. The Cyber G.IRL program exemplifies the power of combining technical skill development with mentorship and exposure to diverse role models. By empowering young women in Compton to pursue their dreams in STEAM fields, this program is fostering a new generation of tech-savvy leaders.
G.IRL provides girls and gender-nonconforming youth from underserved communities access to resources, knowledge, and skills that are not readily accessible to them in their neighborhoods.
