GO on the Ground: Tanzania Beach Lifeguards

GO CEO & Founder Scott Fifer has touched down on the shores of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania—where lives are being saved every single day thanks to our GO Partner, Tanzania Beach Lifeguards.

Founded by Tanzanian-American student Remi Chande and National Swim Team coach Amina Mfaume, this grassroots initiative is tackling a hidden but deadly crisis: youth drownings. In Tanzania, most children never learn to swim—it’s simply not part of the culture. But with so many families living along the coastline, that gap has tragic consequences.

That’s why Amina and her team are working to change the tide by:

Teaching children to swim—for free.
Training the country’s first beach lifeguards.

During his visit, Scott met Amina and the lifeguards right on the beach, where he saw their work in action:

“Kids in Tanzania don’t learn how to swim, and many end up drowning. Our Local Hero here has created a lifeguard program, with stations along the beach. You’ll see them in their yellow shirts—they are saving lives constantly. It’s amazing to see this project in action.” – Scott Fifer

With just one lifeguard station in sight, Scott witnessed the incredible impact this program is making. Every rescue, every swim lesson, every yellow-shirted lifeguard on duty is part of a movement that is giving children and families not just safety, but hope.

GO Campaign is honored to support Tanzania Beach Lifeguards and Local Hero Amina Mfaume, whose dedication is turning the tide against preventable deaths and building a safer future for the next generation.

Stay tuned for more from Scott’s time in Tanzania!
