Twenty Years Later: From School Dropout to Doctor
Twenty years ago, they were children with uncertain futures. Today, they are artists, leaders, parents, graduates, and changemakers. Their stories are still being written.
Hezron, Age 9
When Local Hero Keziah Mwaura first met Hezron, he was just nine years old. Having dropped out of school, he spent most days roaming the streets and helping care for his younger siblings.
Recognizing his potential, Keziah invited Hezron to live at Gatanga Children's Center. It was there that he began to thrive. A gifted student, Hezron excelled academically, earning top marks on Kenya's national exams and setting his sights on an ambitious dream: becoming a doctor.
That dream was not easy to achieve. Over the years, Hezron faced obstacle after obstacle, but he never lost sight of his goal. After six years of medical school in Russia—including navigating the challenges of war and personal health struggles—he graduated with honors and earned the title of Dr. Hezron.
Today, he is back home to Kenya, taking his national exams, ready to use his medical training to care for his community and expand access to healthcare for those who need it most.
As GO Campaign celebrates 20 years, Hezron's journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when a child is given the opportunity to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams. The future once imagined for him is now becoming reality.
This GO Day of Giving, celebrate 20 years of impact with a gift of $20. Together, we can help more children access the opportunities they need to build brighter futures.
